“Working with Sharon was a great experience! I will be contacting her again for sure! Sharon is friendly, professional, and easy to communicate with. Her feedback was both broad and detailed, giving me encouragement as well as food for thought. Her feedback will help me take my novel to the next level.”

3/15 – M.L.

“I am blatantly plugging for the editing, proofing and reading services that Sharon Umbaugh can provide, and has provided to me. Without her I would be lost in the desert, literally. And the cost, the bottom line question that keeps all aspiring authors from even considering professional services, is very reasonable. If you want your creative best (and don’t think her services are a subsitute for writing abilities, they are not), to get out to the marketplace, you need her.”

“I just want to put a huge thank you out there to my beta reader! You are the best and I can’t thank you enough for your time and advice!! If you’re looking for a great beta reader or editor, please contact Sharon. I couldn’t be happier with her services and the help she gave me.”

5/8 – Allison

“Just wanted to give a shout out to any writers looking for an editor. I’ve been working with an excellent editor, and she has been awesome to work with! So if you’re looking for an editor or even a beta reader, check her out. We’ve been working together this past week, and she has really helped my work shine! Thanks, Sharon! :)”

Sharon has applied her literary hatchet to my first attempts since Christmas, and has completely revised how I write into something that is now approaching readable. I have millions of words written on the computer. Sharon is patiently and with unfailing humour gradually persuading me to make them into stories.

If you’re looking at Sharon’s site and wondering whether or not to make use of her services, my advice would be to go ahead and contact her. I sent difficult material to several professional beta readers and Sharon’s input was exceptional. If you only use one reader/editor, it should be her. If you use more than one, make sure to include her.

I recently had a book read by Sharon, and found her comments and suggestions really helpful. So much so that I revised the book and sent it straight back to her to read it again. Sharon’s input has been invaluable and I am confident my book is so much better because of it.

I’d like to thank Sharon for her services! The beta read of my first two scenes was exactly what she promised. She was able to find areas that needed attention. Her commentary was to the point and helpful. She was willing to communicate back and forth until she understood what I was looking for as a client and a new author. I was more than pleased with the result of her beta read. I highly recommend Sharon’s services for anyone who is looking for a fresh set of eyes and a skilled mind to read through your work. Thank you for your help, and I look forward to working with you again in the future.

Sharon’s given me invaluable input about the early part of my work in progress. Thanks to her comments I’ve altered the timeline of my story to improve the pacing and clarified character motivations and dialogue throughout

Prepare to be humbled and challenged and to revise, revise, revise. Sharon will encourage you to work hard but also praise the parts of your work that stand out. She is definitely interested in making your book the best it can be.

+ She becomes immersed in the characters and the story.
+ She checks and questions everything. The ensuing cutting and revision process can hurt but is always worth it.
+ She is straightforward and direct but never tactless.
+ She makes suggestions but doesn’t force anything down your throat.
o Sometimes you will have to wait a few days for response but each of your questions will be answered.

Sharon, thank you so much for your hard work. Through you I have learned so much that I can put to use in my next story and I will definitely keep you updated on my progress in querying.

Hi! I just had my book edited but would consider your opinions and expertise. How much do you charge to go over 220 page book.

Do you want to become a stronger writer? Don’t hesitate to hire Sharon. For a steal of a deal, she provided a thorough and informative reading. She offered relevant and constructive feedback in the areas of
-Character development: internal and external motivation, and reasonable reactions.
-Plot: tension, pacing, and points of confusion.
    -Consistency throughout the story.
Sharon also responds in a quick, professional manner to all emails, and stays involved in the story after her reading. I will continue to use Sharon whenever I need a thoughtful, thorough, professional beta read.

I would also like to recommend Sharon as a great editor. She is extremely thorough and works quickly. She engaged totally with my book and gave me very helpful suggestions and pointers. I am currently working on the manuscript with renewed vigour. I think it is crucial to have such input if you want to get the best for your book. Money very well spent! Thank you.

Enlisting Sharon as my beta reader was the best decision I made as I am preparing to submit my literary novel Generation Lost and Found. She is everything wrapped up in one service; structural editor to line editing proofing. Her comments in line helped me look again at scenes and the nuances of my four POV characters. I never felt she was telling me exactly what to do, rather having me ask myself the perfect question at that point in the text to make it better. It was as if she was there in my writer’s brain balancing out the need to do more or less.
The whole editing process was a long in-depth conversation from my intro chapter to helping me with a query letter about something very important – my story and the best way to reach my goals.
She is a total professional! Thanks again.

I can’t say enough good things about Sharon’s work. She helped me make my first manuscript so much better, and now is doing the same with my second. Beta reading or editing or something in between, Sharon really strengthened my writing. She is quick-working, efficient, and personable, and I will definitely be turning to her again for future pieces. Highly recommend.

I definitely recommend Sharon for all your literary needs. She is thorough and offers more than superficial suggestions. Working with her over the past several months has made my novel much stronger and thanks to her help, I am receiving manuscript requests.

A quick thank you to Sharon…
Sharon’s beta reading services have simply been miles and miles above and beyond any other assistance I have found. I used several beta readers for my 98k manuscript and although I am grateful for a few other fresh perspectives, I know that next time I will simply save my money and go direct Sharon. Her services are significantly more expensive than others, and it was a stretch for me: but she is more expensive for a reason, and I am so glad I took the risk.
Her insights were invaluable, she was a thorough reader, clearly ‘present’ on every page, with a very strong understanding of the genre; she was refreshingly sharp and ruthless with everything that didn’t make sense/needed to be amended, whilst simultaneously incredibly encouraging.
Real help, a thorough job, and insight from someone who understands publishing and loves literature – I will be using Sharon for all my future writing projects.

Authors, look no further. Because ‘The Writer’s Reader’ is AMAZING. Sharon took my complete mess of a manuscript and turned it into actual readable material. Not only are her insights about the plot/setting extremely valuable, she basically line edits as she goes. You won’t need another Beta-Reader/Editor ever again!

Working with Sharon was great. She confirmed much of what I already suspected regarding my writing style and whatnot as well as offered suggestions on how to better the areas that needed improvement. She also pointed out parts of the MS that needed work that I hadn’t considered. She gave me insight into what was going on in her mind while she read and that helped me see my WIP from the perspective of someone unfamiliar with my world.

Having never written a novel before I was somewhat nervous about having anyone review the manuscript of my debut novel let alone someone with Sharon’s credentials. I shouldn’t have worried. Sharon’s help has been a revelation. Much more than observations, her comments are supported with genuinely helpful suggestions and a good dose of humor. Her encouragement is inspiring and it has been a pleasure using her beta read service to polish my story. Highly recommend!

I am grateful to have found Sharon Umbaugh! Sharon completed beta edits for two of my middle-grade novels. Sharon’s feedback was thorough and spot-on. Her analysis and suggestions enabled me to enhance and deepen my manuscript, and I appreciated her knowledge of YA and MG literature! In addition to providing high-caliber editorial critique, Sharon also wears a “reader’s hat.” Sharon’s manuscript annotations revealed questions and thoughts a reader might have when reading my work. This process helped strengthen and clarify my writing; in addition, she helped me avoid those treacherous plot holes! Sharon is professional, personable, and very reasonably priced. I look forward to working with Sharon again on future projects!

Nervous about sending my novel to someone I’d never met, Sharon not only gave me encouragement but also the confidence to continue to publication. She was much more than a beta reader, offering detailed advice without interfering with the story. Her meticulous observations, noticing intricate points I’d never have picked up on, allowed me to edit my book into a much better novel. Thank you, Sharon. Look forward to working with you again!

Sharon manages to do the impossible. She can encourage you as a writer in a honest way while also telling you straight up what your manuscript badly needs. Any one who has tried using friends for beta-reading or developmental editing would know what I mean. Be sure she would find what’s good, bad and ugly about your manuscript.

Sharon went above and beyond and it’s absolutely clear that she loves what she does. She is intuitive and very sensitive in her communication. Her comments have made all the difference, not only in revealing what doesn’t work, but also in what does. Her turn-around time is excellent. I can’t thank her enough for her work, her support and her encouragement. Until the next installment, Sharon…

I had a wonderful experience with Sharon (and I consider myself an experienced amateur writer, I’m a professional copywriter by trade and was waitlisted for a full ride FA). She was able to give both high level feedback, which is uncommon, re the structure of my book, as well as detailed analysis on what technical aspects needed improvement, in a way that made it easy & clear how I could immediately improve my writing technique as a whole–while managing not to crush my delicate ego. I will be going back to her for my next book!

I’ve been a non-fiction editor and ghostwriter for close to thirty years. Why would someone with my experience hire Sharon Umbaugh? Because she’s honest and free with her opinions. Because she identifies tonal shifts that I would never notice on my own. Because she calls me out for my occasional hubris. Because she tells me when my characters go astray and need to be reined in. Because she notices little inconsistencies that erode credibility. Because her advice and opinions are grounded in her professional experience. Oh, and she also finds typos. Imagine that!

In short, a serious writer needs a serious reader, and Sharon Umbaugh is the reader who should be in every author’s corner. Hire her today. She is worth every cent.

I provided Sharon with the opening chapters of my manuscript and she helped get me on the right track with her straight-forward and honest comments. She provided insightful and thorough feedback within a quick timeframe. She was also very responsive to my follow-up questions which I found extremely helpful. I enjoyed working with her and appreciated her thoughtful input.

Sharon has been such a big help! I’m a new writer and there are a lot of technical aspects I didn’t know, that I now feel like I’ve become much stronger in. She’s really kind and always give you a thorough answer. She’s not afraid to give you an honest answer, but also not too proud to change her mind either. My novel has taken a huge step forward and become much stronger after I’ve included Sharon. I’m very happy I did! And I expect to keep working with her, with future revisions 🙂 Thank you Sharon!

Sharon beta read my debut novel, Crucible of Fear: A Thriller, and did a fantastic job. Her years of experience showed in ways that really mattered, like what someone was reading to show character, if a certain section was overly dramatic or cliché, not to mention a slew of grammar and spelling fixes. She was great collaborator and I can’t wait to have her work on my next manuscript!

I recently hired Sharon for some beta reading on a crime fiction novel. Her feedback has been incredibly helpful. She’s enthusiastic and encouraging, but also honest and clear in her reactions to the story and the characters. And her insights into proper formatting have been invaluable to a first-time novelist like myself. I intend to continue working with Sharon. I highly recommend her to anyone looking for a supportive, but honest, writing coach.
